If we could add one feature to every patio, it would be a seating wall. A low wall built from the same block or stone as the patio gives you permanent seating for a crowd, frames the space so it feels like a room, and often solves a grade problem at the same time. Here is why clients love them and how we build them.

Seating for Everyone, No Furniture Required

A curved seating wall around a fire pit seats far more people than a ring of chairs, and nobody has to drag furniture out of the garage. Guests naturally spread out along the wall, and there is still room for a few comfortable chairs in the middle.

It Defines the Space

Open patios can feel like they float in the yard. A seating wall along one or two sides gives the patio an edge, the way walls define a room inside. It separates the patio from the lawn or planting beds without closing off the view.

It Can Hold Back a Slope

Many of the seating walls we build do double duty as small retaining walls. Where the yard rises behind the patio, a seating wall holds the grade and creates a level planting bed above it. Where the yard drops away, the wall keeps the patio edge safe and finished.

Built-In Lighting

The cap of a seating wall is the perfect place for low-voltage lights. Small fixtures tucked under the cap wash light down onto the patio surface, which makes the space safer and gives it a warm glow in the evening. We run the wiring during construction so nothing shows.

Pillars, Caps and Details

Pillars at the ends or corners of a seating wall add height and a place for a light, a planter or a drink. Cap stones in a contrasting color give the wall a finished, furniture-like look. We match block color and texture to your pavers so the wall looks like it was always part of the design.

Along Walkways, Too

Seating walls are not just for patios. A low wall beside a front walkway gives a place to set down groceries, frames the entry, and can hold a planting bed at a comfortable height.
