Garrison’s Landscaping builds hardscapes for homeowners in north Greensboro and across Guilford County: paver patios, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, fire features, walkways, steps and drainage. We are Licensed, Certified & Insured and based in Rockingham County, and Gary Ford is involved from the first site visit to the final walkthrough. This page covers what we build, how we handle Guilford County clay and sloped lots, and how a project runs.
Paver Patios in Greensboro
A paver patio is where most hardscape projects start, and the first piece to fail on a thin base. Red clay holds water and moves as it wets and dries, so we excavate below the topsoil, build a compacted crushed stone base, screed the bedding layer and lock the pavers in with edge restraint and polymeric sand. The patio is pitched away from the house so rain runs off. We build with concrete pavers, natural stone and travertine, and size the patio around how you will use it.
Retaining Walls Built for Guilford County Clay
Many lots slope toward a creek, a pond or a neighbor’s yard, and a retaining wall turns a hillside into usable flat ground. Our walls sit on a compacted crushed stone footing, with drainage aggregate and perforated pipe behind the block. Taller walls get reinforcement, and caps finish the top and can carry lighting. We replace failing timber walls and build tiered walls on steep grades.
Outdoor Kitchens, Fire Pits and Fireplaces
We build stone-veneer kitchen islands with built-in grills, storage and counters, plus wood or gas fire pits and outdoor fireplaces. Fire features are best planned with the patio so the footing, the gas line and the seating fit together, but we add them to existing patios too.
Walkways and Outdoor Steps
Paver walkways go on the same compacted base as a patio, wide enough for two people. Steps are solid block or natural stone set on a compacted footing so they do not rock or settle. Common projects are a front walk that replaces cracked concrete, a side-yard path and block steps from a raised patio to the yard below.
Yard Drainage and Grading
Standing water after a storm and a soggy strip along the foundation are drainage problems. Depending on the yard, we regrade, run downspouts underground, or install French drains and catch basins. When a project includes both drainage and hardscape, drainage comes first.
Lighting
Low-voltage LED lighting in steps, under caps and along walks makes a patio usable after dark and safer on sloped lots. We install fixtures during the build whenever possible.

FAQ: Greensboro Hardscapes
Q: Do you work in Greensboro, or only in Rockingham County? A: Both. We are based in Rockingham County and work across Rockingham & Guilford County. In Guilford County that includes Greensboro, Browns Summit and Summerfield.
Q: How do I get an estimate? A: Fill out the free estimate form and tell us what you have in mind. We will set up a site visit, and after the visit you receive a written estimate. If you would rather talk first, call (336) 552-7764.
Q: My backyard holds water. Should that be fixed before a patio goes in? A: Yes. Drainage and grading come first, then the patio or wall goes on ground that drains properly.
Q: Can you design the whole space, not just build it? A: Yes. We handle the layout, materials and drainage with the hardscape, so patio, walls, lighting and grading are planned together.
Q: Do you offer ongoing yard services? A: No. We are a hardscape design-build company: patios, walls, outdoor kitchens, fire features, walkways, drainage and lighting.

What Greensboro-Area Customers Say
Gary helped us completely redesign our backyard. We had a backyard that was an eyesore and he upgraded it by regrading the entire area for better drainage, putting in a large firepit, stone paver walkway, retaining wall, and a small putting green. He definitely has an eye for creativity and always had new ideas for different things we could do to enhance the area. He was always on top of things and was a pleasure to work with.

Gary and his team added a granite stone extension to our existing patio. He also added granite to incorporate our herb garden to our patio and took care of a poorly placed down spout… It turned out beautifully! The whole area looks brand new! Gary listened to our needs and completed the project in just a couple days!
Kelly Guyler, Google review, October 2025
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Gary at Garrison's landscaping for many years. He is thoughtful and dependable and takes the time to understand the project and offer the best solutions to execute it. I also rely on his creativity, something I lack, to make our landscapes and hardscapes around the house look beautiful. My wife and I have been completely satisfied with the quality of his work and highly recommend him.
Jim Williams, Google review, February 2026
Garrison's landscaping consistently does a fantastic job with my shrubs and bushes, which I am very particular about. He and his crew are always detail-oriented, friendly, and knowledgeable […]. In my opinion, he is the best in the area.
