French Drains That Move Water Away for Good
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe at the bottom. Groundwater and surface runoff filter down through the stone, enter the pipe and are carried away to a safe outlet. At Garrison’s Landscaping, LLC we install French drains for soggy lawns, water against the foundation, wet crawl spaces and side yards that never dry out.
Built for North Carolina Red Clay
Red clay drains slowly, so a French drain here has to be sized and bedded correctly. We dig to a consistent fall, line the trench with filter fabric to keep clay out of the stone, set the pipe on a washed gravel bed, and run it to daylight, a dry well or a pop-up emitter. Then we backfill, grade and seed or straw the surface so the yard heals quickly.
Key Benefits of a Professional French Drain
A properly built French drain intercepts water before it reaches your foundation or pools in the lawn. Done right, it works quietly for decades with no maintenance beyond keeping the outlet clear.
- Stops standing water in low spots and side yards
- Relieves water pressure on foundations and crawl spaces
- Filter fabric and washed stone keep the system from clogging
- Pipe set to a consistent fall so water keeps moving
- Surface restored with topsoil and seed or straw
Before we dig, we walk the property in the conditions that cause the problem: where water enters, where it sits and where it can safely leave. We check grades, downspout discharge points and the soil, then design the trench route and outlet around what we find.
A French drain handles groundwater and soaking soil. If your problem is roof runoff, a downspout line or catch basin may be the better fix. If the yard itself slopes toward the house, regrading may be needed. Often the right answer is a combination, and we will tell you which.
