Walls Built to Hold Back Clay
A retaining wall has to resist more than soil. Piedmont clay swells when wet, shrinks when dry and heaves in winter, and water trapped behind a wall adds pressure that makes walls lean. Every wall we build sits on a compacted gravel base with drainage stone and perforated pipe behind it, so water has a way out.
Block, Stone and Tiered Walls
We build with segmental block systems, natural stone and boulders, and timber on smaller grades.
- Segmental block walls for strength and clean lines
- Natural stone and boulder walls for a rugged look
- Tiered and terraced walls that break a steep hillside into usable levels
- Seating and garden walls at sitting height
Turning a Slope Into Usable Yard
A wall can give you level ground for a patio, a driveway edge or a play area. We pair walls with steps where you need a safe way up or down, and with patios and fire pits on the new level.
Site Visit and Drainage Plan
At the visit we look at the slope, the soil, where water runs in a storm and what sits above and below the wall. Taller walls may need reinforcement or review by the city or county, and we tell you what to confirm before we build.
Where We Build Retaining Walls
We build walls across Rockingham County, including Reidsville, Eden, Madison and Wentworth, and in Greensboro, Browns Summit, Summerfield and Oak Ridge in Guilford County.
Common Retaining Wall Projects
Typical jobs include a wall behind the house to level a back yard, a driveway-edge wall on a cut bank, tiered walls on a steep hillside and a replacement for a failing timber wall. We plan steps, patios and drainage with the wall so they work together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit or an engineer for a retaining wall?
It depends on the height, the soil, what sits above and below the wall and the rules that apply to your property. We tell you what we think applies and what to confirm with the city or county before we build.
What is behind the wall?
Drainage stone and perforated pipe on a compacted base. Water trapped behind a wall is the most common reason walls lean or fail.
Can you replace an old timber wall?
Yes. We remove the failing wall, correct the base and drainage, and rebuild in block or stone.
