Garrison’s Landscaping builds paver patios, fire pits, seating walls, retaining walls, walkways, landscape lighting and yard drainage for homes in Summerfield, NC. We are a family-operated design-build company based in Rockingham County, about 30 minutes away, with 25+ years of experience on Piedmont ground. Our hardscapes are backed by a 5-year workmanship warranty.

In 2026 we built a complete back yard in Summerfield: a circular fire pit patio with a seating wall, a retaining wall, a curved paver walkway, lighting and a synthetic putting green. The details are below, along with what we know about building here.

What Summerfield lots are like

Summerfield is a town in northwest Guilford County, north of Greensboro along the US 220 corridor. Many homes here sit on an acre or more, with long drives, mature trees and back yards big enough for more than one outdoor room. Lots this size usually have real changes in grade, so a flat patio often starts with a retaining wall or regrading, and longer walkways between the house, the patio and the rest of the yard need lighting.

Red clay and slopes

Under the topsoil, Summerfield has the same red clay as the rest of the Piedmont. It holds water after rain, shrinks in a drought and pushes on anything set into it. Our patios go on four to six inches of compacted crushed stone over geotextile fabric where the soil calls for it, with screeded bedding sand, edge restraints and polymeric sand in the joints. Walls get a compacted base, drainage stone and fabric behind the block and a rear drain pipe.

Paver patios, fire pits and seating walls

We lay round or square patios in Belgard pavers, set a fire pit in the center or to one side, and wrap the edge with a seating wall capped in double bullnose stone. Under-cap LED hardscape lights draw about 3 watts each. The fire pit patio in the project below shows how these pieces come together. Our paver patio installation page covers the build in more detail.

Retaining walls

Segmental block walls hold a slope, frame a patio or create a level yard. We build them on a compacted base with drainage stone and fabric behind the block, and we can extend an existing wall with return sections when a plan changes. See our structural retaining walls page.

Walkways and landscape lighting

A curved paver walkway ties the back door to the patio and the yard. We compact the base, lay the pavers with a soldier course border, cut the curves by hand and add paver steps where the grade changes. Low-voltage LED path lights on a timer light the way, with the wiring buried out of sight.

Yard drainage and grading

Big lots move a lot of water. We install catch basins, French drains, downspout lines and dry creek beds, and regrade yards so water falls away from the house. Read more on our yard drainage solutions page.

Fire pits and other extras

Some Summerfield yards have room for a fire pit with a seating wall. We build the pad on a compacted stone base, set the pavers or block, and plan seating height and clearances around the fire.

How a free estimate works

It starts with a visit to your yard. We walk the property with you, measure the areas you want to change, check the grade and the way water drains, and listen to what you have in mind. A written estimate follows by email, with the scope spelled out so you know exactly what you are getting. There is no obligation and no pressure. If the plan changes, we revise the estimate before any work is scheduled.

A Recent Summerfield Project

A 2026 Summerfield project: fire pit patio, walls, walkway and putting green

A Summerfield homeowner asked us to turn a back yard with a grade change into a complete outdoor living space. The work was built in stages.

The centerpiece is a 15-foot by 15-foot circular Belgard paver patio with a 4-foot fire pit in the middle and a wood box built into it. A 24-foot seating wall about 30 inches tall wraps the patio, finished with double bullnose caps, plus decorative columns about 36 inches tall with caps.

To hold the grade, we built a 36-foot retaining wall about 28 inches tall, four courses of block with a matching 4-inch cap, on a compacted base with drainage stone, fabric and a rear drainage system. The homeowner later added two 6-foot return sections at 90 degrees, each about 3 feet high, and then roughly 5 more feet of Versa-Lok Standard block on each side.

A curved walkway area about 9 by 18 feet leads into a 4-foot by 36-foot Belgard paver walkway with a soldier course border and two paver steps. It sits on 4 to 6 inches of compacted aggregate over geotextile fabric, cut and fitted around the curves, held with edge restraints, finished with polymeric sand and graded for runoff.

Lighting came in two layers: ten low-voltage LED pathway lights along the walkway on a 150-watt transformer with a timer, and 19 hardscape lights under the caps of the columns, seating wall, wood box and retaining wall, each about 3 watts.

The last piece was a 432 square foot synthetic putting green on 4 inches of compacted #57 stone and a 1-inch screenings layer, graded for drainage, with four regulation cups and flags and a fringe around the perimeter. Disturbed ground was graded, seeded and strawed, with coconut erosion-control rolls while the grass came in.

What the homeowner said

Google review

Gary helped us completely redesign our backyard. We had a backyard that was an eyesore and he upgraded it by regrading the entire area for better drainage, putting in a large firepit, stone paver walkway, retaining wall, and a small putting green. He definitely has an eye for creativity and always had new ideas for different things we could do to enhance the area. He was always on top of things and was a pleasure to work with.
